This law is unconstitutional any way you look at it, from the way it was passed to the fact that it's retroactive. The punishment does not fit the crime. I could understand even a temporary band for X amount of years, but not for life.

in 2001 I plead guilty to a misdemeanor DV to stay out of jail and pay a fine, considering the charges were bogus I was young and scared. I had absolutely no idea that pleading guilty to a misdemeanor would result in loosing a constitutional right. The lautenberg amendment is an illegal amendment and needs repealed.

Plead no contest to misdemeanor DV, only because I wasnt aware of the long term consequences. Me and the wife had an argument, just a lot of yelling no violence whatsoever.. I was fresh out of the academy and we just wanted to get on with our lives so we both plead and was charged, now I can never be a police officer again or even enjoy my favorite pastime, hunting with my sons... This law is completely ridiculous.. My entire life has been ruined because of this awful legislation.

I think this law is too harsh. It should be changed to say something to the effect of : 2 or more misdemeanor domestic convictions will prohibit you....or.....you conviction must contain and element of actual physical violence.....or.....make the ban for 5 years, for life is too harsh. People make mistakes, that doesnt make them murderers so dont treat them as such because they made one mistake.

I feel very strongly that the lifetime firearms ban is in direct contradiction to the second ammendment. Also if nothing else nowhere else does ex postfacto conviction of a crime cause loss of constitutional rights

Some people are in the wrong place at the wrong time, people get into.arguments it's human nature. If a couple gets into an argument and a "good Samaritan" calls the police, when the police show up they have no choice if the argument is between domestic couples but to arrest one or both parties. This starts the process of taking someone's rights away. The government then starts the process and gives the person accused very few options, this is not fair to those who were arrested and rights taken away things happen and sometimes you are punished with no.prior criminal activity and barred firearms and job opportunities no matter how hard you work to show you are not a threat to the initial person or society. I believe this is a stiff punishment that needs to be reworked and rethought for those who are trying to be better people and members of society.
