We, the undersigned, demand that Florida Statute 1009.286 be repealed to make college education affordable to all students.

Florida Statute 1009.286 charges students an excess hour surcharge equal to 100 percent of the tuition rate for each credit hour in excess of 110 percent. This means double tuition per course, which is outrageous considering the current cost of education.

This statute states "the Legislature intends to enact a policy that provides incentives for efficient baccalaureate degree completion". This is statue is not an incentive to students, it is a penalty for a desire to learn.

Education should be affordable to all and students should not be forced to pay double for additional class because of their desire to learn or change in interest.

This statute could prevent students with financial hardships from reaching their goals and do exactly what the statute was enacted to prevent.
