The Get Down is an incredibly important form of media for representation. Young people of color and young lgbtq+ are impressionable, and having such a successful show portray similar characters in a positive light allows them to feel celebrated and more confident in their own identities in a personal environment that may not otherwise be altogether nurturing. Additionally, the music in the show is a beautiful expression of the origins of an undervalued genre. The characters are raw, complicated, and well-developed. The story of being torn between one's dreams and the desires and expectations of our loved ones is universal and it is refreshing to see it portrayed in a realistic way. The Get Down touches on subjects that have been deemed taboo, subjects that need discussion in order to bring about change. Many of the issues of the 70s are highly relevant to this day.
