March 3/10: Halton District School Board Halton's trustees overwhelmingly voted in favour or naming Milton's newest Elementary School "Tiger Jeet Singh Public School". ABOUT TIGER Tiger Jeet Singh, born Jagjit Singh Hans in 1944 is a semi-retired professional wrestler, known better by his ring name Tiger Jeet Singh. He wrestled as a crazed heel, coming to the ring with a sword in his mouth (and using it to taunt fans and attack wrestlers). Singh has become the most successful Indian pro wrestler in history. A long time resident of Milton, Tiger Jeet Singh was named and has served as "Milton's Goodwill Ambassador" by the Mayor's office since the 1980s. He was recently honoured as one of the inaugural members of Milton's Walk of Fame. His list of his philanthropic and humanitarian works is an incredibly long one. This petition is in no way intended to discredit the man, nor what he has done for the Town of Milton, the province and our country, as well as globally. THIS PETITION Our petition is to request is for the Halton District School Board and Town/Regional members involved in the decision to reconsider the naming of the elementary school to Coates Crossing (or one of the other nominated, alternatives), primarily for the reasons below: 1) WRESTLING: A VIOLENT SPORT No matter how much of a terrific humanitarian Tiger Jeet Singh is, his illustrious wrestling career will always be at the root of his success. This may not bother some people, but it does others - especially for a Grade School - and we are merely asking they reserve the name for a high school. 2) OUR COMMUNITY The deciding committee wants to increase the sense of community? How more proud (& accurate) can you get than Coates Crossing Public School? Hawthorne Village has Hawthorne Village Public School; yet Coates Crossing gets the thumbs down. Seemed like the obvious winner. Very odd to say the least. To support the re-naming of Tiger Jeet Singh Elementary School to Coates Crossing (or an alternative via a vote), please sign below:
