I have been going to Albaik and Makany-as-was for years. I was taking two friends there when I saw the name had changed to "The Bake" and we were about to turn around and go elsewhere, thinking it had become some sort of cake or pie shop! Luckily we smelled the spices and went to find out what was going on. If we had been driving we would probably had kept right on going, not realising that it was really the same place. I am sure they must be going to lose custom through the name change to something so misleading. The staff told me that Albaik means the same as "bake". That might be true but it doesn't work. AlByker is an inspired suggestion - but anything more appropriate than "The Bake" would be be a great. (What a great idea, to do a petition, by the way! If the management has got any sense they should get some press coverage out of this too!)

The food here is brilliant but 'The Bake' is the worst name I've heard for anything, ever.

So excited that Albaik is coming to Gosforth. It would be even more exciting if it honoured its Byker and Middle-Eastern roots with a wonderful pun!

I love this restaurant and wish it all the luck in the world starting a franchise. I still like the old name the best though.
