Adan “Sonny” Rosa III was a band director at McAllen High for 31 years. He did his student teaching there and stayed on until his untimely passing in September 2021. During that time he touched the lives of thousands of students, as seen by the outpouring of affection and visitors to his memorial services and his social media page. He was the percussion instructor of the McHi Band Drumline and also served as the director for the steel band, Pan O’ Steel. He also assisted with the middle school bands at Morris, Travis, and Brown Middle Schools. In addition, Sonny also taught courses at UT-RGV and South Texas College. He was also a member of the Valley Symphony Orchestra and the RGV Percussion ensemble. During his college years Sonny was a member of the Sky Ryders Drum Corps. Sonny’s life was dedicated to teaching and playing music and it’s only fitting that the McAllen ISD honor him in this way. I formally ask that the McAllen ISD School Board examine Sonny’s career at McHi and that they talk to both former and current students and peers to see the impact Sonny had on their lives. In doing so, you will see that renaming the McAllen High School band Hall the Adan “Sonny” Rosa III Music Education Building is the right thing to do to honor Sonny.

Even though I wasn’t a student in his section Mr. Rosa always strives to help me in whatever way possible whether it be helping me practice difficult pieces or just simply giving me advice. He was easily the best director I ever met and deserves to have his hard work recognized.
Mr. Rosa is deserving to have this honor bestowed upon him. H worked countless hours teaching and preparing his students for performances. He taught our sons to love music and they continue to play their drums today.
My brother Sonny was the most influential person in my life. He was so a very influential person in the lives of 1000s of students, teachers, faculty, and friends who either studied under him or with him.
My husband who passed away 3 years ago was a band student there at McHi and remembered him fondly. My son was a band student at McHi also and I served on the band booster board for 3 years and got to know Mr. Rosa. Its only fitting that the band hall is renamed in his honor.
Mr. Rosa was my drumline instructor and without him I wouldn’t know how important it is to have music in life. I don’t know where I’d be without his teachings. He was my inspiration and encouraged me to try hard on making the drumline. Please help!
