Enforcing Safety Measures: Removing Electric Scooters from IV Streets
In Isla Vista, our lovely college community thrives within its one-square-mile. However, the introduction of Lime and Bird scooters have sparked a concerning trend; marketed as a convenient transport, these scooters appeal to the intoxicated students on weekend nights, posing a huge safety risk. With speeds reaching almost 20 miles per hour and no helmet requirement, they are a recipe for disaster. Falling off these scooters at full speed can result in terrible accidents, and not being able to see these scooters at night puts students at huge risk from automobiles. In a community where everything is walking distance, these scooters are not a necessity but a liability. With each day these scooters remain on our streets, the potential for more accidents and injuries is at large. I, alone, have heard of multiple accidents within my circle. For example, the first hand experiences of individuals like my best friend, whose recent accident led to a broken jaw and surgery. If left in the community, the scooters will continue to jeopardize the safety and security of Isla Vista residents. By joining together to demand their removal from Isla Vista streets, we can send a powerful message that safety in our community takes priority over the profit of these companies. Please unite in this cause by signing and sharing this petition to amplify our voices and to ensure that our friends and neighbors do not become the next victims of preventable accidents. Thank you for standing with me to make Isla Vista a safer community.
