These landmarks are disgusting and vile reminders that glorify the inhumane treatment and abuse against African Americans. Please take them down.

It's way past time to do some work toward repentance and healing in our area.

I had family live in Shelby awhile and even 20+ that was one hurting and divided community. Monuments to white supremacy make it clear that you don't believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people in your community. Peace be with you all

Let’s get rid of statues that commentate evil dudes and evil times. That seems like a good idea.

I remember watching the KKK march by these monuments 30 years ago (at July 4's annual "Freedom Fest") Even at just 10 years old, I thought the hateful ignorance on shabby parade would soon be extinct. Later as a teen, I chanced on a very old book about the history of Cleveland County. I was shocked and grossed out to discover it a glorification of how the Klan saved our civil order from the horrendous dark other. It's 2020 and the world is on fire because we never pulled that hate out by it's many deep and tangled roots. Taking down these statues and changing the name of the road forces this discussion below the surface to where those roots actually live - in us. It's time.
