I feel that there is nothing more American than taking down confederate monuments. The Confederacy and the “heritage” has caused harm not only to our fellow citizens and ancestors, but also to the fabric of this nation that was almost ripped apart. As for Dixon Boulevard, I did not know the history behind the name but now that I do I also know I don’t want this town to be associated with something so repulsive.

Please note the statue is on grounds owned by the county and is not affiliated in any way with the Earl Scruggs Center beyond its physical proximity.

As a child I disliked the Confederate Monument as ancestor had been disabled in the Civil War fighting for the Union, and I didn’t understand the desire to memorialize those who fought against the United States. As an adult, the combination of its location and more understanding of the history of post Reconstruction segregation and discrimination has caused deeper concern.
I was shocked the first time I saw the Dixon plaque! And I failed to connect it to the name of Highway 74, but am now quite disturbed by that, too. The murder of a distant cousin, Madge Oberholtzer, helped bring down the 2nd Klan, I’m proud to be able to sign a petition to stop honoring the man who sparked that Klan.
I hope both of these things can be moved/changed to stop causing pain and division.
