Remove Tod Machover as Commencement Speaker @ Peabody
To the Administration of the Peabody Institute,
We the Class of 2026, along with current students, faculty, staff, and alumni, disapprove
of the Peabody Institute’s decision to select Tod Machover as the recipient of the George
Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music and Dance in America and as Guest
Commencement Speaker for the Class of 2026. We find this decision to be an implicit endorsement of artificial intelligence in the arts. For the reasons laid out below, we find this outof touch with the artistic values of our students and faculty and feel it is a poor representation of both the class of 2026 and the storied history of music-making and artistic practice at the Peabody Institute.
We have intentionally kept the wording of this online petition broad so that supporters may identify their own reasons in comments below.
However, for the full letter text (PDF) we will send or have already sent to Peabody administration, click here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mnrPK5CdZly9gA89y...
If you are a current or graduated affiliate of Peabody or JHU, you may want to indicate degree and year in a comment (e.g. B.M. Computer Music 2026).
