Remove the proposed changes to the Auburn South Primary School Canteen
We, as concerned parents at Auburn South Primary School, reject the proposed removal of the "Red" items on the current canteen menu, as decided by School Council. While we understand and support the need for a Healthy Eating Initiative as outlined in the message on September 22nd 2017, we feel these changes take away from the choice we, as parents, have in what our children eat on a daily basis. The vast majority of canteen orders are placed by parents through their online account. Therefore it is said parents who decide the foods their children will consume and believe it is not the role of School Council.
The current Auburn South Canteen is very well run by the staff and parent volunteers alike. Many parents volunteer as a way of helping the school and for the enjoyment of their children. The current canteen runs at a profit and is very popular among the school community, something not achieved in neighbouring primary schools. We, as parents, then question why a system that is working well should be changed.
We agree that the school should "promote nutritious foods and a healthy lifestyle" and believe it is up to us as parents to guide our children in learning to make healthy choices for themselves. Simply removing the choice of eating Red food items does not facilitate this. We therefore call for the decision that "These items will be progressively phased out with the goal that all Red
items are off the regular Canteen menu by the start of Term 1, 2018" be reversed.
