Remove The Emancipation Memorial/Freedman Statue

How about we replace it with a strong, confident looking black man holding a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation

Its an innapropriate statue in that's its imagery puts white people on a pedestal above black people in a piece of art that's supposed to be about white people and black people being equal

This and it’s replica in DC should both be removed and destroyed. No sense in saving it. What it represents should no longer remain.

When I look at this, I see the same thing Tory sees, and agree with him that's not an appropriate or respectful image for any theme, let alone 'Emancipation'.

As a city, we need to do more to condemn our racist past and structural racism. We are calling for the removal of this statue so that we can celebrate the successes of black people and other people of color, rather than a history of their oppression.

Let's replace this sculpture with one that respects the dignity of both people.

Such an offensive and degrading monument. Just because things have been wrongfully glorified in the past does not mean that they still hold a place in this country today!

I agree--statute is offensive and needs to be remove. Let's replace it with one that is more fitting of President Lincoln's legacy and honors our values of equality and justice for all.

I agree with removing problematic monuments, but whatever replaces it should also include a plaque describing what it replaced and why. We need to recognize our history, even the ugly parts.
