I've been a History teacher for 20 years (thankfully, at a Progressive Ed-based school); do the right thing and put this statue in a museum to educate others. Boston needs to be better than this statue. We should have been in 1865/7; we have a chance to be in 2020.

How does this honor my life? It memorializes and tells African Americans now and in the future, we should be grateful, grovel and be in my news to the powerful White man. I will be given a crumb while you pretend it is full equality. Take it down

Wow, finally! I am a white woman and I too have found this statue repulsive since I was a child. As a child, I wondered why the slave was not standing tall, a man on equal status with Lincoln. When I came across it again last year, I was repulsed and wondered why it still stood. Time to go! How dare any statue purport to show any white man being the blacks savior? Tear it down!

I understand the intent of the statue, but the execution is all wrong. The freed man should be standing as an equal with the President - perhaps with the broken shackle as a symbol of the broken chains but now the man is an equal to any other man - including the President who freed the slaves.

This statue does not belong in our society today. It needs to be removed. I've seen it or noticed it before- but its quite offensive, cringeworthy and patronizing.Please city of Boston remove it- any maybe out something that actually honors Black lives and Struggles in its place like the author states.

I support the idea of a Boston museum of 'historical atrocities in plain sight' to house all these statues that have stood in public spaces well into the 21st century.
