Terrible statue. Always thought so, even as a suburban white kid. What were “they” thinking to erect such a demeaning memorial. Lincoln would have hated it.

Remove this statue immediately or modify it.

Great and necessary move.

I am a 73-year old white man who walks and bikes past the sculpture very often. I appreciate that the intent of the sculpture is to celebrate a transformative moment in American and human history, but the image does not meet that intent. It is offensive (albeit unintentionally, I am sure) and should be replaced with a more inspiring image.

This statue is patronizing, offensive, and needs to go.

I have not seen statue until now and it should be recommissioned to a black man standing tall and not kneeling; and Lincoln should not be made into a god because he did not free the slaves out of a lot of love

I agree, this statue makes black people look subservient even if it was supposed to celebrate freedom.

This statue was condemned by Fredrick Douglas when it was first put up - 60 years later it still shouldn’t be up. It is not erasing history it is reclaiming it for what it was.

I once worked very near this statue and as a white guy wondered why the black man was portrayed in this subservient position. This art work needs storage, and a better representation of Lincoln & Emancipation needs to replace it with public input and perhaps a contest of proposals that an Art committee with Mr. Bullock as leading member to choose.

Center black folks in any monument to freedom. Period.

I became aware of this statue about 7 years ago and was pretty disturbed when I stumbled upon it. It is NOT the message we as a city should want to members of our community nor to visitors. The statue should be removed and replaced immediately. Everyone I have ever discussed it with has thought the same.

I cannot wait to see this replaced with something more dignifying!!

Remove, remove, remove. Replace with history that isn’t only to glorify the white perspective and horrible atrocities against other humans. Specifically Black.

There are other statues of Lincoln that could replace it IF NECESSARY to do so. This is not the one for Boston particularly given Boston’s history.
