The statue still highlights and unhealthy systemic posturing that places a white man has the hero and the black man a fortunate recipient of his generosity. Freedom should not be seen as a gift.

I remember this statue very well during my years in Boston. I worked on Stuart street and whenever I went for lunch around the Park Plaza area will look at that statue with disdain. It looked to me like the slave was being petted like a dog.
