This statue not only attempts to embody the idea of the “white savior” complex that many Americans have but it does it in such a way that it is instantly demeaning to the black community by placing their representative in it so far below Lincoln. Do the right thing and pull this antiquated image of discrimination down.

Reflecting an african american in shackles at the kneeling at the feet of a white man does not reflect emancipation, rather the complete opposite. This is unacceptable and we should do better.

Statues represent the values and mores of the people who built them at the time that they were built. The Confederate statues that some many people are wringing their hands over were mostly built during two different periods; around the end of Reconstruction and during the mid-Twentieth century Civil Rights movement. They were clearly done in the spirit of Southern Pride and White supremacy when both concepts were pretty much one and the same. To remove them is to say we no longer see things in that sense. Our values have changed.
We should remove this statue, but NOT destroy it. I don’t feel good in trashing the hard-earned money that Black folks put into this monument. We should honor their hard work by placing this monument into a museum and replacing it with a monument that shows how far we have come…and how much farther we need to go.

Frederick Douglass, one of the most eminent human rights leaders of the 19th century, was completely right. This statue and any replication of it is an offensive display of the delusion that is white supremacy. Memorializing white saviorism is patronizing. You shouldn’t get points for stopping a problem your own people started. Lincoln’s true motivation for The Emancipation Proclamation was to preserve the Union. At first any slave state willing to join the Union could keep slavery. But none of the Secessionist states took Lincoln up on his offer. Therefore, he finalized the proclamation which didn’t apply to all states and had little affect of the majority of slave states. The Emancipation Proclamation was a military measure, it was about territory not abolishing slavery. So let’s stop rewriting history with these statues that perpetuate white lies. We don’t believe it and we don’t want to see it!
