Question 3 of Part A on the 2013 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge asked students to find the total area of an odd number of concentric circles. Due to its ambiguous wording, it was extremely unclear what the question was asking for. There are many possible valid interpretations of the question, ranging from the total area of the odd-numbered rings, to the total area of the odd-numbered circles, to the area of the largest circle, within which all the other circles were contained. With so many interpretations, it is unfair that students are punished for simply arriving at the wrong one. The COMC should not become a contest of who can guess at the meaning of an unclear question. Thus, it is only fair for the Canadian Math Society to remove this question from the scoring process.
