This person should not be teaching racism to students, in Ann Arbor or anywhere else.

I’m a white girl, but I did regular experience humiliation from being in her class as one of the more vocal students with poorer grades. I was repeating the class and didn’t do a lot of homework, and at least once a week she would make that known to the class. Although I don’t recall her being openly racist in class, I got very bad vibes from her regularly regarding her stance on social issues. I’m happy to see others affected by her are succeeding and brushing aside her comments or actions, but she does not deserve to be teaching at a school that claims to be a respectful and open-minded community.

To the brave students who used their amazing wits to speak up for their rights and concerns, bravo!! Keep it going. Let the people in charge know that racism amongst other things will no longer be tolerated. Don't let the closing of schools distract this vile woman's horrid actions. It is appalling that a district like Ann Arbor would tolerate such behavior. Flat out disgusting and completely deplorable!! Shame on Ann Arbor!! Keep towing the line young ones!! Proud ✊

The cameras clearly show she never came anywhere near the student. Pure lies, your niece should just get her butt to school instead of missing over 30 days. Shame on her

The facts regarding this are every classroom in the school has cameras. The camera was reviewed, and this teacher never even came close to touching this student. Additionally, there were more than 20 witnesses in the room at the time that the alleged incident took place. This student is simply saddened that she didn’t get away with trying to get a teacher in trouble for her lack of dedication to school.

Went to pioneer for 4 years, never had her as a teacher but she somehow managed to find ways to humiliate or control you wherever she could. She is an incredibly disrespectful and power hungry human being

I had Macke for two years. Never once did I witness anything racist, homophobic, or abusive. She was an “old school” type teacher that would call students out if they weren’t performing to their potential. This includes ALL students. There may be alternative ways to encourage students compared to what she did, but she would never swear, use derogatory remarks, or abuse anyone. Going as far as to call her a racist and homophobe is slander and unacceptable. If those characteristics truly defined Macke, she would have been removed from the school system MANY years ago.

Worst teacher I ever had. Incredibly cruel; would humiliate particular students regularly. Told my entire class that I would probably get "knocked up" and drop out of school. Fifteen years later I have a PhD from one of the best universities in the world.

It is good to see the change in mindset about being vocal in standing up against racism.

I’m only speaking for myself, but I’ve seen a lot of negativity in these comments and decided to say something. I’m black and Mrs.Macke was one of the few people in my life, outside of my own family, that genuinely cared about my performance in school and was willing to push me to achieve back then and later in life. I was quiet in class and she would call me out for it; so yes, sometimes she made students uncomfortable. In general she had an “old-school” approach to things that students can’t really teach themselves. It definitely helped me, but again, I’m only speaking for myself.
I asked her to write my college letter of rec and she cried when I told her some of the things I’ve written above. She’s not a racist, but she’s clearly made mistakes. “Racist” is a powerful and damaging accusation, we should save it for the people who deserve it. I have respect for the victims in any incidents that took place recently. But this shouldn’t turn into a campaign to make her out as a racist, considering all the effort she’s put into teaching for so many years. She’s hard on her students because she cares about them.

She’s extremely rude and disrespectful to the mostly foreign custodians who are terrified of her.
