Petition to remove Lake Lawsona "Historic" designation
Let Lake Lawsona Neighborhoods Decide Their Historic District Future
Petition Summary:
We, the undersigned residents of the Lake Lawsona Historic District, petition the City of Orlando’s City Council and Historic Preservation Board to formally remove the Lake Lawsona Historic District designation.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the Lake Lawsona Historic District was established in 1994, residents supported it for its preservation goals and local character protections. Over time, those goals have been undermined by inconsistent enforcement, over-regulation, and loss of homeowner rights.
Today, our district faces:
- Unequal zoning restrictions and variances not applied elsewhere in Orlando.
- Long permitting delays with no accountability.
- Poor infrastructure maintenance, including deteriorating brick streets.
- Loss of local decision-making after the 2012 transfer of power from the Board of Zoning Adjustment to the Historic Preservation Board.
Residents seeking modest updates, energy-efficient improvements, or reasonable additions face excessive scrutiny — while incompatible high-density residential developments are approved without the same restrictions.
Poor maintenance of old homes is rewarded by permits to scrape and rebuild, while well-maintained homes cannot even improve their windows or build attached additions.
We petition the City of Orlando to remove Lake Lawsona as one of your historic districts.
Our homes and property rights deserve balanced preservation, not endless red tape and the unequal application of rules across the district and city.
Sign this petition to support homeowner choice and fairness for Lake Lawsona residents and forward to your neighbors who will also want to sign.
