This change is very long overdue and we need it now! Indigenous people's day, and stop teaching our kids the myth of Columbus and teach them the truth about history and the still living culture of Native Peoples on this land!!!

I would rather New Haven honor Manitowese, the person who gave the deed to the colonists of the New Haven Colony. We can commemorate the natives that were here, who either deferred to colonists or were killed. We also should pay more reverence to the Amistad and what it means to help those who have had injustices done to them. New Haven could turn around and be on the right side of history in terms of coming to grips with the nation's history with Native and African Americans.

Dear Mayor Toni Harp,
I am from the oldest continuously inhabited human dwellings and community in this country. I am of the Red Willow People from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. I am also a long time resident of New Haven since 1995. I've attended Wilbur Cross High School and SCSU. My daughter has also attended the New Haven school system starting in kindergarten up until presently as a Junior at Co-op High School. We are proud of our native heritage as we are to be from a diverse and progressive city that continues to grow and improve.
We do not agree with honoring Columbus for obvious reasons that any citizen should be outraged about. As Natives it is our duty to bring awareness and preservation of our cultures within this country, community and city. We are an almost forgotten people.
Columbus' values of genocide, slavery and colonialism are not traditions we should be celebrating. I understand the presence of a strong Italian community in and around this city. That too should be honored but not with Columbus Day as Germans do not honor Hitler. I feel many Italians honor Columbus under false heroism.
It is so important to honor our native ancestors as this is what we have fought and died for. As we write history, honoring the Indigenous peoples of this land is something our children can be proud of and our children's children. Never again would people have to question why we honor someone like Columbus. Let's honor our ancestors, our offspring and honor life.
Please strongly consider removing Columbus Day and replacing it with Indigenous People's Day.

Italian American heritage does not need Columbus to continue to honor it. If anything it’s an opportunity to rethink our connection to a brutal legacy.
