Nassau County has recently expanded its camera based ticket system from Red Light Cameras to School-Zone Speeding Cameras. This petition is to remove all School- Zone Speed cameras in Nassau County, NY. 1) School-zone cameras do not relate an individual driver, rather the car owner.
2) There are no local statistics proving their effectiveness in increasing safety near schools. In fact, during most hours of operation, children are on school grounds, not crossing busy roads.
3) These cameras are being installed to raise money, not for safety. They are projected to generate revenue of $25 million per year in Nassau County, NY - a quarter billion dollars during a ten year period. 4) These cameras unfairly punish safe drivers. Those people who are driving 30 mph do not endanger children.
5) They will re-route traffic patterns from major boulevards to our local streets which are not equipped for the traffic. Thus, cameras will unfortunatelydecrease traffic safety in our local neighborhoods.
6) Nassau County has not implemented a fair and just system to contest these tickets. Many drivers have stated that they are driving under the speed limit and obtaining tickets in the mail with an incorrect speed listed on the ticket. There is no recourse short of appearing in a court hearing. If Nassau County insists on maintaining cameras, they must have a better system for contesting the violation.

too many un marked areas, too much concern with looking for obscure signs and checking my speedometer instead of watcvhing the road to actually see if children are crossing at the wrong places, like the middle of the road. too high a price for these tickets. This will stop me from shopping in Hempstead in particular where I got two tickets.
This is nothing more than another tax of the residents of Nassau county. How many children/people were hit by cars in front of schools on the past 10 years? I haven't heard of any. If this was an ongoing problem, I would understand but it is not. The politicians need to wake up and get to the root cause of the problem which is the school taxes.
These speed cameras have no warning signs and the signet hat are present are partially obscured. This is a moneymaking scheme designed to play Gotcha with drivers. I have received 2 tickets in the past two weeks, eating into our household budget. Please stop this injustice!
Very poor roll-out of this system. I haven't received a speeding ticket in over 20 years, now I have two $80 tickets in one week. How are we to know these cameras even work correctly? I suspect this is a PC fundraiser for the county.

These traffic cameras are ridiculous. They've gotten (or perhaps always have been) out of hand. You can't make right turns on red signals when the road is clear to do so?

would like to know if the law said that the cameras have to be on the street of a school why is the one that was on mill rd in valley stream in front of a pvt house and not in front of the school?
