Eden Prairie Schools has decided to start the 2021-2022 school year on one of the most important holidays of the Jewish faith(As important for many of us as Christmas is). We are asking the school board to delay the start of school by one day. Jewish students shouldn’t have to choose between their first day of school and the holiest day in their religion. I am an EPHS graduate. I know work in a school that has a high population of Jewish students. I couldn’t imagine asking students to choose between observing Rosh Hashanah and attending the first day of school.

We would not start school on important Christian holidays like Christmas or Easter, therefore, we should not start the school year on an important Jewish holiday. It’s 2021. Be accepting of others, be respectful, and be flexible (it’s only one day!) Other school districts have made the adjustment, EP should also!

In the 80s and 90s when I grew up in EP there were few Jews who lived in our community. But that has changed and times have changed. Please listen to these Jewish students and supporters and show you welcome all at EPHS by making this change.

When I was one of the few Jewish EPHS students back in the mid-90s, this was a bit of a problem for me, too. I would hope the district could concede the one day. I don't think folks would even ask if it weren't the FIRST day.

I’m feeling very privileged right now that my kids never had to attend school on Christmas Day. Please move the start date by one day to ensure equal privilege for all our kids. The first day of school after the end (hopefully!) of a global pandemic is one no parent wants their kid to miss!

As a parent of two children in the district I support this call to action to change the first day of school. In knowing the importance of this holiday for the Jewish Community and failing to do what other districts have already done shows a callous disregard for students and families of this faith. Please make the change.

This should not even be an issue. Would we start on Dec 25? No.
