The sentencing of Junaid Hafeez, and that too to death, is outrageous. The very idea of blasphemy needs to be questioned, though of course I understand that people have religious sentiments that they might feel have been "hurt", and that most countries will not permit outright and absolute freedom of speech. But unfortunately the literature has shown that blasphemy charges are generally baseless, and more often than not an excuse to help a community maintain solidarity against the imagined outsider, enemy, traitor, or mere dissenter.

I am appalled there are only 417 signatures so far — there should have been at least 417,000 ! Currently there is probably NO CAUSE in Pakistan more deserving of support than this one. Junaid Hafeez IS A HERO. Let him not become a martyr — it would be the worst precedent possible for our benighted country.
