Release Dr. Partho Sarothi Ray and others held by police for protesting against eviction at Nonadanga
To The Governor of West Bengal Raj Bhawan Kolkata Respected Sir, We are deeply worried that the police in West Bengal have started harassing all activists, including a young and promising scientist Dr. Partho Sarothi Ray, for raising their voice in favour of the homeless who were evicted by the police from Nonadanga, Kolkata. Dr. Ray and six others are presently under police custody. Dr. Partho Sarothi Ray, is an Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata, one of the five such premiere institutes that were created by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to promote quality education and research in basic science. Dr. Ray is a Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance intermediate fellow, 2010 and an Associate, Indian Academy of Sciences, 2010. He, along with six others, has been implicated by the Tiljala P.S. under several non-bailable sections of the penal code. We demand immediate release of Dr. Ray and others and earnestly request you to urgently take the necessary steps not only to this effect, but also to ensure that everybody is allowed to voice democratic protests in this state of West Bengal as per the Fundamental Rights given to us, the citizens of India, by our Constitution. Faithfully yours
