Effective fall 2011, admission to the Africana Studies Program at Western Michigan University was suspended pending review of the curriculum, which has never happened. The Africana Studies program helps to prepare students to think critically, to express themselves creatively, to respect cultural diversity, and to make independent contributions to the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual growth of the world community. This petition urges the university to act now to reinstitute the African Studies Program.
My Bachelor degree in Africana Studies has given me the necessary tools to decipher and navigate through our culturally diverse world. It is a shame that others cannot earn those same skills. Bring back Africana Studies!

The Africana Studies program is important to the University. The global student population of Western Michigan University benefits from the opportunity to learn about the culture of Africans and African Americans.

I took African Literature at WMU and I learned so much about the African culture. I still own the books I read in class, and read them to my own daughter now. Our country is a big melting pot and African culture is a big part of it. Bring back the Africana studies program and give another generation to close the gap of cultural ignorance.
