Club teams have safely been swimming since summer. With proper precautions, there is no reason to cancel the season.

ACPS's decision to make the broad decision to cancel all winter sports shows a lack of effort to support their student-athletes. While canceling winter sports, such as wrestling or football where close contact is unavoidable, makes sense, it does not make sense to cancel all winter sports. The ACPS administration should've taken each sport on a case by case basis, which would have shown that swimming is a viable sport during the pandemic. Swimmers are not forced into close proximity when competing. According to the CDC, "There is no evidence that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can spread to people through water in these places."* Additionally, the National Federation of State High School Associations has classified swimming as a "low risk" sport, because it "can be done with social distancing or individually with no sharing of equipment or the ability to clean the equipment between use by competitors."** USA Swimming local swimming committees around the countries have reopened and held meets, demonstrating that this sport can be engaged in safely, given there are proper guidelines set in place. The most prominent local LSC, Potomac Valley, has successfully employed these guidelines, having held 3 meets with club teams since the start of November. ACPS is rightfully cautious sports to restart, but an effort has to be made to afford their students the opportunity to participate. As previously mentioned, club teams have proven the success of efforts to facilitate swimming during the COVID pandemic. Some safe solutions implemented during Potomac Valley meets and practices include locker room closure, mask wearing at all times, limited numbers of swimmers per lane, temperature screening, capacity and no spectators. Instead of announcing a lazy, sweeping cancellation for all sports, ACPS owes it to their students explore solutions such as the ones above. *https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/beaches-pools.html **https://www.n

I'm not sure if parents who agree with the ACPS decisions should express their opinions here, but I don't see any other way to have my say. Are parents willing to risk their children suffering a potentially life-long disability? Is swimming and diving competition so critical that coaches, officials, pool operators and athletes are willing to ignore the raging pandemic? My sister is a nurse and she is watching previously healthy people die every day. The lesson to our children is to give a little now so we have a future with our friends and loved ones. Everyone is entitled to risk their own personal health, but chlorinated water does not stop the coronavirus; indoor activities are proven to increase the chance of infection; even healthy children can be direly affected by this virus. I say sacrifice now so we can have a better chance down the road. These sacrifices weren't done in March, April and May and that is why the US never dropped below 20,000 COVID cases a day. I do not support this petition.

Open the swim team. There is no scientific reason to close the swim team. The athletes need this activity.

The kids need this and are very unlikely to die from this disease.

Please be thoughtful and judicious and do not cancel activities that do not increase the spread of covid just to appear to be doing something.

Swimming is BY FAR the most safe sport during Covid. All of the local swim clubs have been practicing for months with almost NO cases of Covid.

There is no basis for ACPS to make this unilateral decision and not allow swim & dive to proceed . The guidelines put in place by the state's health department are more than adequate to enable those comfortable with their children competing and getting exercise to do so.

Many programs are swimming safety and competing during this pandemic. No excuse, that you cannot have a plan to do the same!!!
