Regulation of Dirt Extraction Pits in Mills County Iowa

On my way home from training at my temp job at Omaha Steaks it was like driving on glare ice between Applewood road and the Bellevue corner--and it was dark out--or at least almost dark. Just for fun I tested my brakes and my anti-locks kicked in--just for a split-second though--but I was scared. And obviously I'm not the most professional person in blogs or just in general--but that was just an incident I had tonight.

When is enough enough. These dirt extractions need to show some common courtesy to the neighbors, citizens of Mills County and tourists. Cover the loads, regulate the start and stop times, no jake brake usage, repair the damage to the roads being caused by these trucks. This expense should not be place on the citizens of Mills County. And most importantly, the Board of Supervisors, the Board of Adjustment, IA DOT and any other regulating body MUST enforce the regulations stipulated within the special use permit.

I've lost track now of how many times I've had rocks from these trucks hit my windshield. I seem to remember us being assured that as a "good neighbor",they would make sure that loads were covered with tarps?! I'm waiting for the day that my windshield actually cracks!

and just for the record too--I go into Glenwood on pole road now because those trucks turning in front of me like that makes me think that the back end of their trailer is going to hit my front end every time I go to Glenwood in the middle of the day when the trucks are out there. Oh and also--might I add the obnoxious horn honking and the fact that the county never cleaned up a dead deer in front of the greenhouses in the eastbound lane. Last Tuesday we were on our way home from dinner at a friend's house and that deer was laying there seriously with one of its legs standing straight up in the air in the eastbound lane--someone could have serious damage done to the underside of their car if they hit it. This probably isn't the most appropriate place to "rant"--but it's the truth.

I've also noticed the last few weeks or so that all the trucks have this "SLN" logo at the bottom on the left-hand side of them (if you're driving them they're on the driver's side, but if you're just looking at them they're on the right). I don't know what that stands for--I haven't looked it up or anything. But there's Leick trucks, there's Pink trucks, there's those "side dump'r" ones, actually yesterday I think they were driving around at like 7 or so in the morning. I know it was like barely daylight and I dealt with them yesterday on my way to work at the post office--and they were still there on my way home--but then halfway through the afternoon they were gone. Don't know why--it was weird--GOOD--but weird.

The dirt borrow located by our property seems to have no end date. The Board of Supervisors and Board of Adjustment just keep extending the length and amount of dirt that can be removed. There needs to be a date when the project will end.

This morning it was raining lightly for approximately 40 minutes and the trucks continued to operate in the wet conditions. Barrus road was like a go-cart mud track, slippery with mud flying up towards the windshield.I was traveling at a low speed and was in my commute car. I sure had wished for my safety I had my 4 wheel drive vehicle or better yet my 4-wheeler. I am concerned that greed is more important than safety more often than not during these operations. This seems to be the trend. Once again this was during the same time school kids are driving into town. When will our county think safety first?

The road is a mess. The traffic is terrible. You can feel how damaged the road surface has become in the time that the dump truck traffic has been using it.

This dirt removal operation, to include supporting operations, is cause health issues for my family and a reduced quality of life for us. It is also diminishing my property value, causing me lost in investment and limiting my ability to sale the property and relocate. At minimum the county should reassess our property taxes and reinvest some of the money being made back into the affected neighborhoods, such as paving the roads, adding safety and sound deadening features around the property, etc.
