Dear JMSC Faculty,
Recently, we received the bill for our spring 2020 tuition.
This bill took many of us by surprise considering we never received feedback from HKU about our petition for fee reduction.
While we appreciate the online resources developed by the JMSC, they are not a substitute for face-to-face classes. Many of us no longer have access to the equipment office, which is pivotal for learning and engagement in a skills-based program. We also have had issues communicating and receiving information from instructors, regarding things being posted on Moodle.
Today, we are asking for a 45% reduction in admission for the Spring 2020 semester. We believe this reflects the value of a purely online program.
We are willing to negotiate this amount, but would like the University to respond to our concerns in a timely manner.
We look forward to receiving HKU’s response.

The administration at HKU has stayed silent for far too long while we pay full tuition for empty facilities. This surge in support proves they cannot ignore us forever. It is time they stop hiding behind their desks and finally address this theft.

Its ridiculous paying full price when I cant even get into the lab. Half the stuff on moodle is broken anyway.
I chose JMSC HKU because its hands-on courses. I appreciate all the professors' effort to keep things normal, and I also know these are difficult times. I know on one signed up for the online courses, but seriously, AT LEAST, AT LEAST give us some reduction? The equipment office is almost always closed, the online coding lessons are no different than other courses, and I finished my R assignment mostly by Google because there're just so many things I didn't learn in class. Also it's making me really mad that the University didn't feel like our opinions matter. What, just because we are civilized so the people in the departments don't feel like responding words that actually mean something?
Considering some universities have already given refunds to students, I believe HKU can and will be one of them.
I really appreciate all works done by the faculty during this difficult period. However, I don’t think online program values the same as face to face teaching, which we expected when we decided to study in HKU. Not to mention we didn’t get any reply from the school administration about our last petition.
The fact that there wasn't any follow-up to the previous petition feels even more insulting.
