We the residents of Wandsworth are not
prepared to turn our backs on those fleeing conflict zones in the current
refugee crisis. We note that Kingston
Council has committed to finding suitable accommodation for 50 refugees. We call upon Wandsworth council to work with
community leaders, local people and the council’s housing team to co-ordinate a
similar initiative in Wandsworth without affecting people on the Council’s
current housing waiting list. We want to
ensure that our local community plays its part in assisting those displaced by violence
and war to find a safe place to live. To
this end we want the council to work with the existing resettlement schemes,
funded by the European Union, as well as to explore other means of supporting
refugees.
The Council could open Centres in Wandsworth staffed by local residents where donations of food and clothing and toys and medicines could be distributed and advice given.
