Final supporters
We the residents of Wandsworth are not prepared to turn our backs on those fleeing conflict zones in the current refugee crisis. We note that Kingston Council has committed to finding suitable accommodation for 50 refugees. We call upon Wandsworth council to work with community leaders, local people and the council’s housing team to co-ordinate a similar initiative in Wandsworth without affecting people on the Council’s current housing waiting list. We want to ensure that our local community plays its part in assisting those displaced by violence and war to find a safe place to live. To this end we want the council to work with the existing resettlement schemes, funded by the European Union, as well as to explore other means of supporting refugees.

I am truly overwhelmed by the momentum we have built together. This progress belongs entirely to the residents who chose to speak up for our neighbors. I never imagined this request would resonate with so many people.

I fully endorse this petition as a long term resident of Wandsworth, We are fortunate enough to be in a position to welcome and support some of these unfortunate families. As I am sure we would hope to be helped if we were in a similar situation, we have a colelctive duty to do so.
One of the few things which Wandsworth can be proud of is the way that people from many parts of the world happily live together; therefore we are well suited to accept refugees.
I wrote to Councillor Govindia last week (copied to the leader of the Labour group and and my ward councillors) to ask what Wandsworth Council planned to do about the refugee crisis, but did not receive a reply. Good to see that the Greens are on the case.

This is the biggest migration of people fleeing conflict since the 2nd World War. I couldn't stay on with bombs and armed soldiers all around me and Syrians, Afghans, Sudanese and many others cannot either. We have to help.
Capitalism is a ruthless socio-economic and ideological system that creates endemic inequalities and injustices throughout the world. Imperialism and neo-colonisation uproots people and forces them to move elsewhere to look for safety and shelter. Wandsworth Council in London should be in the vanguard of providing these services for refugees.
Now is the time to rise to what is best in all of us, and make welcome people from Syria who have been through the most terrible experiences.

The Council could open Centres in Wandsworth staffed by local residents where donations of food and clothing and toys and medicines could be distributed and advice given.
