Reform Party: Gerrymandering Reform
In the 2012 Elections, more voters cast ballots in favor of Democratic Congressional candidates over their Republican opponents, yet despite losing the popular vote, the Republicans won more congressional races. This was due to Republican controlled state legislators using gerrymandering techniques when they drew congressional districts.
Gerrymandering is a strategy in which the party in power draws congressional districts in a way that benefits the party by marginalizing the voting blocs of their rival parties by spreading their voters out in multiple districts.
I support thefollowingin making changes on how districts are drawn by:
1. Putting together new laws and regulations that restrict how districts are drawn that reduce state legislators’ abilities to pack districts with certain demographics.
2. Commissioning nonpartisan redistricting boards at the state level similar to the system currently in use in Iowa
