In 2004, Canadians produced 13.4 million tonnes of waste, with only 27% of that total being recycled. This ratio of wastes produced to wastes recycled is not sustainable for Canada's future. We are here to not only raise awareness of this increasing concern, but to also try to do something about it before it gets too late.

A simple solution for reducing the amount of wastes that households produce, is to limit the size of curb-side garbage bins, just like in Cochrane, AB. By halving the size of the bins, it would help prolong the lifespan of current sanitation landfills, and therefore increase Canada's sustainability for the future. Any garbage that does not fit into the smaller bins will be picked up at a surcharge to the homeowner. An added benefit of this implementation would be that consumers would also be thinking about what they purchase at stores. If they will be paying for excess garbage, then it can be said that they will be purchasing things with minimal packaging. Therefore, the bonus lies in the fact that manufacturers will be willing to place more eco-friendly packaged goods on the shelves.

The goal of this petition is to not only raise awareness about the amount of wastes produced, but to also begin making changes about current habits. By signing this petition, you are asking the City of Calgary to reduce the size of the garbage bins for curb-side pickup. This will show that Calgarians are focused on maintaining sustainability for the future, by making viable changes today.

Thank you all for your support, please share this with friends and family. Together, we can make a difference to better our future.
