Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to save lives. Each year in Woden, TX on FM 226 (Woden Rd.) there are several deaths due to speeding. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to these accidents and in turn, fix the issue. Woden is a very small town, and there should be no issues containing the problem and making it better. It will take some work, but it can be done. We need to keep the children alive and, to do so; we need to crack down on the speeding issue on FM 226, Woden Rd. Problem The issue here is that many residents in Woden (and the surrounding towns) speed on FM 226, Woden Rd. The current speed limit is 75 mph during the day and 65 mph at night. There is only one traffic light, and it is used as a stop sign. There is a lack of control on the constable’s part as well, and a lack of care on the speeding resident’s part. The sad thing is that most of the accidents and deaths are children and teens. Many parents lose their children on this road due to speeding every year. Solution By slowing the speed limit to at least 65 mph (preferably 55 mph) during the day and 55 mph (preferably 45 mph) at night, placing more stop signs, traffic lights and electronic speed signs, there could be fewer accidents on the road. It would also help with the local constable would enforce the new rules. If the town of Woden chose to use the electric speed sign it would snap a photo of the driver. Every time the driver speeds by one of these signs, their image would then go to the constable’s office. They would receive a ticket each time this happened. Since Texas is a “Three Strikes State”, once the offender received a third ticket, they would lost their license and be ordered to pay a fee along with the ticket amount. If for some reason the above are not enforced, there is always the option of using “speed cameras”. As the website (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21069682) states, “Compared with controls, the relative reduction in average speed ranged from 1% to 15% and the reduction in proportion of vehicles speeding ranged from 14% to 65%. In the vicinity of camera sites, the pre/post reductions ranged from 8% to 49% for all crashed and 11% to 44% for fatal and serious injury crashes. Compared with controls, the relative improvement in pre/post injury crash proportions ranged from 8% to 50%”. So, with determination and hard work, the number of vehicular accidents can be lowered, therefore saving lives. If need be, a petition can be passed around Woden, TX and the surrounding areas stating the issue and the fix. If enough signatures were gathered, we could take it to Supreme Court. This is not a difficult thing to do. In order to draw up a petition that would work, I would need to know the target audience. This is simple, anyone with a driving teen, and anyone that has concerns regarding FM 226 (Woden Rd.). In order to do so, I would need to describe the situation, which is already well known and established, suggest what needs to be done and explain why it is needed. This is simple, effective thing to do. Conclusion With a little time and effort, and a few changes, the amount of accidents and accidents causing death could be lowered, if not stopped completely. The town of Woden has too many “Memorial Foundations”, such as the Don Parker Memorial Fund (Tracey Meador. Internet (www.woden.tx.wdh.schoolinsites.com) Don Parker Memorial Fund), as it is. With a population of 400 (http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hnw56), the town cannot afford to lose another child due to careless driving. Let’s not lose another life due to carelessness. If you had a child of driving age and you lived in this area, wouldn’t you want your son or daughter to be as safe as possible?
