In order to maintain a community which is well-balanced including 30% of families who have school-age children along with retirees we must control costs. If costs rise at a rate greater than inflation or those who can afford it on a fixed income then the town or migrate toward the younger population and lose the wisdom and richness of it's older population. Ultimately this budget decision we will go to town meeting and people show up will vote on its magnitude with privacy in their hands. It's not hard to imagine that an overly large request for budgetary increases would have a better chance of being defeated if it was perceived to be unfair and or unnecessary. Herein lies the risk of asking for too much.

The need for us to show greater concern to change the budget seems to imply they have a mandate to make the 4.5% increase. Where does that come from? Who are the people who actively want this increase?

I think our taxes are high enough. We do not have a realistic idea about cost containment. We are always wiling t give big raises to the unions nd this needs to stop,

I do not believe the School Committee is doing it's job. For all the taxpayers of Wayland.There is complete lack of any long term planning,as I found out at the recent school committee meeting with the finance committee.Everyone wants a high quality education system in the town,but it can't be like a runaway train picking up new costs as it rolls along headed to a disaster.The whole town suffers as a result.Fiscal responsibility is the job af all town departments,including the school committee

Why is the school budget increse 6X the rate of inflation? The latest inflation rate for the United States is 0.8% through the 12 months ended December 2014, as published by the US government on January 16, 2015.

The Wayland school Budget way out of control and way over the FinCom Guidelines and they need to go back and rework the numbers

I find it hard to believe that the school committee believes that Wayland citizens are in agreement for a 4.5% budget increase. I, for one, would like to see a 2% reduction each year for 4-5 years, which could be accomplished with little change in overall services.
