to redesign the Detroit Shoreway RTA Shelters
The Detroit Shoreway RTA shelters are remarkably flawed in design. They are intended to create a sense of place and incorporate public art into the fabric of the neighborhood. However, they are completely ineffective at their intended use for a number of reason, as follows:
o Constructed of metallic material, they are sensitive to temperature conditions and conduct those conditions easily to a rider.
o The sides of the shelter do not allow visibility. It is hard from within the shelter to see a bus approaching, or for the driver to see a rider within.
o The bench only seats two passengers and at an uncomfortably close vicinity for most strangers
o The Shelter is wrought with 1” holes that allow rain to fall within the shelter.
o The mostly open design allows rain to collect on the bench and does not shelter from wind.
These Shelters alienate people from public space. Often riders resort to waiting in the doorway of the businesses near the Shelters. This creates a poor environment for local businesses as well as for potential customers.
Functional public art and a sense of place is a fine goal and this petition does not advocate against it. This petition is intended to see the removal of this non-functional design and instead be replaced with a functional design for the benefit of RTA riders as well as the neighborhood.
