This presentation was formally presented to city council on Monday, January 13th. After our delegation, council decided to forge ahead with the closure which is scheduled for February 2020. We will keep you posted with any new developments...but keep the signatures coming as we are going to do everything we can to get the depot back in New West!

++++

The City of New Westminster is planning in 2020 to close down our popular recycling depot located next to the Canada Games Pool. If the city closes down this facility, residents will be forced to drive, walk or take transit to Coquitlam to drop off their recyclables. We all know this will unnecessarily result in more recyclables being put into the garbage.

By signing this petition, you agree that the City of New Westminster should put a halt to their plans and immediately conduct a more thorough consultation with local residents. If enough people sign the petition, our local politicians will be forced to listen to the community.

Here are 3 questions that should be properly canvassed and answered during a consultation process:

  • How many additional tonnes of carbon emissions will be emitted as a result of New West residents being forced to drive to Coquitlam to drop off recyclables each year?
  • Has the city fully explored every opportunity to either incorporate a recycling depot on the same site with a new Canada Games Pool – or find another piece of land whereby it can be relocated?
  • Is there an estimate as to how many recyclables will now end up on the waste stream as a result of the depot moving out of our city?

If you would like to volunteer and help save our recycling depot, please contact Rachele or Daniel at [email protected] or visit our Facebook page by clicking here.

You can make a difference. Please sign the petition today and help us keep New Westminster a clean and green city!

I am currently drafting formal requests for the city to release their environmental impact data. The feedback from local residents keeps confirming that closing the depot is a massive mistake.

It would be very inconvenient to take out a recycling center from New West. Currently with it's location many people including myself can even walk over and bring recycling. If we had glass, plastic and styrofoam pick up from our homes then it wouldn't be so bad.

Where will we recycle glass now? And paint? And anything else that the garbage companies don't take? New Westminster, come on! You can do better than this!! Or should we all move to Coquitlam where the people seem to be more eco-friendly??

I certainly will NOT be driving to Coquitlam to drop off recyclables. Absolutely not wasting my time or my precious gas and trying to visualize taking public transit to do so is absolutely laughable. We NEED to keep our local facility!

For just our condo complex alone, the closure will cause a hardship, It just does not make sense for a City that prides itself on being green and whose goal was once to be come the greenest city in the world, to not have our own recycling depot.

We need a local recycling solution. Driving to Coquitlam to recycle is counterproductive to reducing out carbon footprint. Are my taxes going to be lower with the savings? Why stop at recycling? We could all drive our garbage to Coquitlam as well.

Benefits of current location: 1. Very small foot print 2. Users do excellent job of self-sorting recycling streams 3. Amount of recycling in blue bins will soar if facility is closed - and it will not be sorted 4. Facility is very well used

I use it all the time! It was one of the reasons we bought our place in New West!
