To bring more recycling to Indianapolis, we want to create a program modeled off cities like Seattle, San Diego, and others. This program would make curbside recycling not only free, but required. The trash service would pick up the recyclables (glass, #1-7 plastics, aluminum, tin, and steel beverage and food cans, newspapers and magazines ) biweekly, on the same day as trash collection. Households that don’t recycle will be fined. The goal is to not raise taxes at all. Though we don’t have access to information like city budget and estimated costs, which are important factors in this proposal, we still want to pitch that Indianapolis try this program in a 4-5 week trial. At the end of the trial period, a public meeting would be held to receive input from the community and also figure out if the program is economically reasonable. Hopefully, Indy will find that they can make this program work so the city can become a leader in environmental actions.

I have been spending my evenings researching how other cities handled their initial transition to mandatory recycling. It is clear that we have a massive opportunity to modernize our waste management if we just get the pilot program off the ground.

Seeing this kind of energy for cleaner streets in Indianapolis is truly overwhelming. My own neighborhood looks so different when we manage waste properly and I am grateful so many of you feel the same way.

My trash can overflows with plastic every week and it makes me feel so guilty throwing it all in the landfill. PLEASE do this.
We need this so bad. My kids are always asking why we cant put the soda cans in the blue bin at home.
Finally. It is way too hard to find a decent drop off spot around here. About time we caught up to other cities.
Dont fine people though that part is overkill. Just give incentives for doing it right.
YES! Indy needs to recycle more. Its 2017 guys come on.

I lived in seattle for 3 years and it worked great there. Indianapolis is behind the times.
