Central Bedfordshire Council to reconsider 20mph speed limits due to unecessary danger to motorists

Oppose similar scheme intended for Linslade, Leighton Buzzard

26 mph Sunday lunchtime on a road that has always been 30? This is madness. Nothing to do with safety.

Stop 20 mph zones.

New to the area and very shocked to receive the speeding charge for going at 26 mph. I never speed, but this tiny, badly placed sign has really caught me out here. Has there been a terrible accident on this road with someone travelling at 30? Could the council explain their action to impose such a low speed on such a wide road. It feels very odd to travel this slow and not in keeping with other roads in Dunstable. Seems sad to be focusing on catching out people that are trying to abide by the laws, rather than targeting the blatant law breakers or dangerous drivers out there. I will do the offered speed awareness course to avoid the points, but really what a joke. And what a waste of everyone's time! Literally daylight robbery in my eyes!

26mph at midnight, last time I drove this route it was deemed safe at 30 mph. Stop the really dangerous maniacs on the motorways.

Driving from the west the 20mph sign at the mini roundabout at Drovers Way is impossible to see when concentrating on the traffic on the roundabout. Why is it so close to the junction?

This is an unatural speed for mature drivers who have 50+ years of 30 mph

It is very difficult to keep to this speed.

When did Drivers Way become 20 mph, I was aware of the change in Brewers Hill through the new signs but not in Drivers Way.

20mph is too slow and causes more problems.... understandable around schools but an blanket across all roads its simply bureaucracy at all levels.

Clear and reasonablely sized signage of the 20mph limit, before the 20mph zone starts would at least allow motorist enough time to safely slow down and be clear of the set speed limit!

I have contacted Luton on Sunday and Beds on Sunday about this as I am not convinced Central Beds have met the regulations for either the size of the repeater signs and their distances apart. I too have travelled down here at 30mph without issue before and the introduction of a 20mph limit seems unjustified and unnecessary. Everyone i know that has been caught 'speeding' along here has been doing on or around 30mph......hardly excessive given the nature of the road. If their intention is to improve safety then better informing drivers of the 20mph limit could be much more effective, as it stands it really does appear to be catch as many people out as you can. I would also be interested to know the accident stats for this road to justify the introduction of the 20mph limit.

I've also been issued with an intention to prosecute for doing 26mph on Drovers Way. Please keep me updated on the progress of appeals.

I agree...just got letter for going 27! I didn't know it was 20. In drovers way. It just makes me angry that the police don't focus on real crimes.

it is difficult for non-residents to realise this arbitrary speed which appears to be in place for no other reason than to make money. Presumably to pay the salaries of the Police Commissioner and his deputy.

The 20 MPH speed limit is far more dangerous than the national speed limit of 30 MPH as it promotes impatience from other drivers and is to all intents and purposes unenforceable.

We often go this way and was very shocked to learn that this was a 20mph area. According the main page on the highway Code, it still states a 30MPH in a built up area where there are streetlights. It is only until you try and look at the fine detail that there is a small clause which states local authorities may choose to reduce this to 20MPH. I was always told that these types of roads were a 30MPH zone. There are very small round discs on some lamp posts to state 20MPH, however, this could be taken as advisory due to minimal data given or advertised by the council / highways agency. We have ended up with 2 tickets over 2 days which we are planning to appeal on (26 and 27 MPH, hardly over the top speed). I suggest that the council look at this and take on board RAC / AA advise and other motorists who seem to suffer everyday due to this unrealistic limit.

I have just received a speeding ticket for doing 26mph in drovers way dunstable for the end of last year. Buracracy has gone mad.

the 20 mph limit is illegal the A.A& RAC state that you should drive in top gear as third gear driving causes skidding and accidents. I have told highways dept this. i have many other problems to point out as well. Cars now travel in convoys front car careful at 17 mph other cars trying to do 20 mph.you can no longer overtake a car doing about 15 mph. at traffic lights I reach 20 mph in less than 3 seconds [I am then holding up all other traffic behind me. this adds to traffic congestion. traffic waiting at lights cause 29 times the normal pollution.health and safety have near doubled waiting times [24x7 ] they have decreased bus parking spaces thus putting buses out into the road & thus creating more hold ups and pollution Heath & safety should be reported to a higher authority as they now effectively run the council they never question any problems they create. Common sense is not taught at University and we now have stupid rules & regulations coming from the Council. W. Borland
