I am deeply concerned with the direction both the Board of Regents and Father Jenkins has been taking our Lady's University. Please get back to traditional Catholic teachings and doctrines in making decisions and faculty appointments.

Notre Dame is not unique to commitment to Catholic values; they have been eroding for some time. Anyone who wants to send his child to a truly Catholic school should look at the assessment of the Cardinal Newman Society.

It is common to appoint a student to the Board of Trustees. I teach at a liberal arts college where a graduating alum is voted to the Young Alumni Trustee (YAT) position each spring. The YAT serves one year.

This pains me because Katie is someone I respect and admire. I'm sure there is much good she could bring as a member of the Board. That said, what makes Notre Dame unique is its steadfast commitment to Catholic values. If we are not unified in this, our Catholic identity will erode over time. Some say it already has. Regretfully, I support this petition. I also implore all critics of Katie Washington to be fair and charitable to her as a person. Best, Mark Weber '09
