The University of Notre Dame asserts and publicizes that it “provides a distinctive voice in higher education that is…unapologetically moral in orientation…”. If so, should not its leaders demonstrate, if not exemplify, the moral virtues? How does this board appointee demonstrate the four cardinal virtues? By her public opposition to both Catholic doctrine and Church leadership in the grave matters of religious liberty and respect for all human life from conception to natural death, she appears to be deficient (at this time) in the virtues of prudence, justice, and temperance. Being Notre Dame’s first black valedictorian and a very nice person are highly admirable qualities, but they are not sufficient reasons to appoint her as a trustee. Perhaps, the Fellows could find a more suitable way for her to contribute her substantial talents to the university? It is most unfortunate that the Fellows have placed her in this position by not vetting her adequately.

Has the Board explainedt how Ms. Washington was appointed, given the anti-Catholic views she has publicly stated? Has the Board indicated what it's going to do regarding the appointment? Thanks very much for bringing this to the attention of alumni and parents.

An appointment like this has me wondering if further financial support of Notre Dame is warranted. Does a "Catholic" university that has become worldly and clueless deserve further support?

I hope that future decisions of the Trustees are consistent with the Catholic mission of the university. Notre Dame needs to be a beacon to prepare for eternity and not succumb to our secular world.

This young woman has not studied the issue from all sides, especially from the Church's world view. Our Church has survived far greater challenges, and has the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to guide its actions. For the sake of the family of Notre Dame, recind this appointment immediately.
