I think this sums up the simplistic views on this petition: "Please choose more women of color as graduation speakers and women who do not represent the capitalist elite through the IMF!". I completely respect the above opinions but then the petitioners have to be coherent and leave the USA, a country that has proven itself to be "imperialistic, ineffective, and oppressive" -- go travel abroad as a Peace Corps for example right after graduation, and ask the people in the street what they think of Boston suburbs offsprings. And, as you have already exercised your very informed vote here, please don't bother vote for Hillary at the next imperialistic election as she has put up all these years with a philandering husband, even having an affair with a young intern your age; you would not want to condone a "value system [not in] in tune with Smith and what [you] are as a community", do you?

This decision reflects poorly on the values of our Smith student body (as stated by the many Smithies before this comment). However, what disappoints me the most about this situation is that this reflects poorly on all parties. Due to this decision, we have put the student body, administration and our speaker in a very uncomfortable position when this embarrassment could have been completely avoided. I fear that this disappointment will not amend itself (as I am sure we all understand, the bureaucracy at smith is suffocating). Nonetheless, let us all remain active and aware as we see how this plays out. After all... that is how we were educated. I am proud of the Smithies that are raising their voice.

I am proud that the Smith College community is as an advocate for equality. As a Senior I am not proud to be represented by Ms. Lagarde. I wish Smith would broaden its horizons beyond women of power and find women for equality to represent us, maybe next year a disability advocate?

The students of Smith College have asked for a woman of color to speak this year. Why can't our president make that happen?

This decision needs to be reconsidered for the sake of what Smith is "supposed" to stand for...Empowerment of women and this is not reflective of that.

The graduation speaker should be reflective of the student body and the goals of the school. The current candidate does neither.

As a Smith alumna, I think that it sends a mixed message to students, faculty, and the public about Smith's dedication to global awareness and responsibility. Though it would be an amazing opportunity to have Ms. Lagarde visit Smith as a guest lecturer to create a dialogue about global poverty, having her represent Smith College with an honorary degree is inconsistent with Smith core values.

Oppression of women is not a Smith value. The benefit of some women, like Ms. Lagarde, is at the oppression of millions of others. I am saddened and deeply disappointed in Smith administration's choice for commencement speakers considering the litany of brilliant women who attempt to create social just futures for all people. Shame on you.

As a recent alumna, I am furious that Smith would make this type of a decision.
