#reopenclc Reconsider the PERMANENT closing of the Children’s Learning Center

We used to send our toddler to this daycare, and we're thinking about sending him back when we heard it was closed. Very sad to see that, it was a great center!

I have observed at this center many times in a professional capacity, and was sad to hear it was closing. The staff was always professional, friendly and sweet with the children. Please reconsider closing it as I know many parents rely on this service.

This center is a valuable resource to the community. It serves a dual role provided much needed affordable care, and as a teaching lab for many Howard County residents pursing child care and education for their future career.

My daughter,Peyton Kim, attended preschool there for two years. It Is a wonderful place.

Like everyone else, my wife and I have been struggling over the last five months trying to keep up with our jobs, while trying to take care of our 4-year old. We’ve been on pins and needles for the last month waiting to find out when CLC would reopen. We’d received very limited correspondence from the school during the COVID crisis, but the few sporadic emails that we had received gave us confidence that CLC would reopen as soon as it was safe to do so. In late July, we started to become aware of other daycare facilities that were opening. So, when we finally got that email on 7/31, we assumed that this was our notification that our son will be going back to school within a few weeks. One can imagine our disappointment when, not only did that email not announce a reopening date, it provided the devasting news that our son’s school was closed. Permanently! We have not yet told our son that his school is closing permanently, as we can’t bring ourselves to do so. He hasn’t set foot in that building since mid-March (and five months is FOREVER for a 4-year old), but he still talks about his friends and teachers in the present tense. It hasn’t even occurred to him that he may not be going back to that place that he loves so much “after the germs go away”. Because of this, we believe that it’s not too late for the school to reopen and these amazing teachers and children will pick up right where they left off.

I was appalled to find out that the CLC was permanently closing. When my son joined we toured a few centers and were very hesitant to send my son in any of them. Either the centers were super small (no space at all to play), or had inexperienced teachers, were too expensive etc. Found CLC by searching for MDSE approved centers (there were very few). We liked the center but as any new parent we were still sad and hesitant to leave our 2 year old in the hands of strangers. But as time passed we realized how great and unique CLC was how amazing the teachers were starting from his very first teacher (Ms Chalese) to his most recent (Ms Julie and Ms Melanie). We also learned how the center benefited not only the children but HCC students who trained in Early Education, Dental Hygiene, etc. I was going through some of the comments and the number of parents of children who have already graduated are a testament to how great this school was. It appears that big-budget projects in the college is still continuing as planned. The community should come together to find a way to save this amazing place.

My 18 yr old and my 15 yr old went there and reaped the benefits tenfold for having done so. Really no other place like CLC where you have quality teachers, low turnover, AND the real benefits of having your child attend a lab school, where they train future preschool teachers. A place that knows child development theory like Piaget and can not only articulate it but put into practice. If CLC goes away, our community will be the lesser. Don’t make this mistake.

I'm signing on behalf of my former colleagues and the now displaced families. It's unfortunate that after all the business and taxpayer funded support allocated over the years to build, improve and maintain the center that it was shut down with no stakeholder input. Shame on you HCC. Once again.

The fact the company didn’t have any transparency regarding the the closure of this center with their employees and Parents is not ok. Many staff members have been employed there for many years and they deserved more than same day notice that this place was going to be closed. Many things could’ve have been done on the teachers, parent and community side to help this place stay open.

Please re open!
