On March 8th, the wall in Lafayette High School's band room containing band member's signatures from the 80's was painted over. Not long after, many people had posted on social media on how this needed to change and how the arts of the school mean the same amount as the sports teams. Painting over those names had crossed the line. By signing this petition, you are helping all of the kids in band, orchestra, choir, theatre, and over all art classes get a name in this school.

Lafayette High School band is always there. They play at our pep-assemblies, they play at our football games, they are part of the spirit too. Not just a bunch of kids that play instruments because they have to but because they want to. They choose to do what they do and they deserve recognition. They are a team and they are a Lafayette team. Just because they're not a sports team, doesn't mean that they're nothing.

Our orchestra is rarely heard of throughout the school. This needs fixed as well. Last year our school orchestra made their way to state and there was barely a mention of it. Just like band, they choose to do what they do and deserve to get recognized for it. They are a team.

We have multiple different choirs at this school and they all play a part. Every year, choir kids go to contest and there's not even a mention of it within the school unless you yourself is in choir. Our choir gets high scores and rating nearly every year and get nothing for it. They are one of us. They are a team. They need recognition.

Theatre performs for us every year. Us, family, friends. They put their own time, their own hard work into making us feel good. They're outgoing, they're hardworking. They are a team. Even the kids who stay back stage and make sure everything is in line, they make a difference. These kids get injured, fall on stage in front of so many people and get right back and going. They deserve recognition.

You may have seen the art kids' projects in the display cases down by the cafeteria, however there's so much more than that. Handfuls of these kids get their art hung museums. Even just recently. These kids get their art put into contests and are ranked in the very top. The most they get is an announcement over the school and they are hardly mentioned again. They deserve recognition.

Other things that have happened around this school that most people don't know about are that the Scholar Bowl kids won a trophy last year. And three of our sophomores are going to another History Day competition after winning one already. These kids need recognition.

We say that Lafayette is a family. It's not when organizations and groups that give this school a name and give this school spirit are tossed to the side. We deserve recognition. We are equally as important as the sports teams that get assemblies appreciating them every month. We get nothing. We want recognition. We deserve recognition.
