Recess every day letter
RECESS
We are a group of parents from Mrs. Jordan’s classroom that are concerned with the amount of recess time our children are getting.
One of the reasons we decided to join this school was because in the presentation at Best Day Ever it was guaranteed by the school that children were going to have recess every day (not as a reward). And also that the curriculum revolved around the student (student-centered) with hands on classroom activities, life relevant experiences with the S.T.E.A.M program.
It was brought to our attention by our children that they are not having recess every day because there was not enough time. Also they were punished with no recess time on Thursday September 8th because some of the children were not following class rules. We strongly disagree with this discipline method as children need to be able to drain energy during recess time every day in order for them to be able to sit still and follow class rules for several continues hours. Also there are tons of researches reviewing the important role of recess in these areas of development: creative, emotional, social development and health. Please refer to quotes on the next page for more information.
We are also very concerned with the lack of motivation our children have towards the school. We believe that this lack of motivation is fuelled by insufficient time of recess or no recess at all, excessive amount of homework and teacher-centered activities rather than what was promised: student-centered activities. Also the main class rule is to “keep the teacher happy”. This should not be the responsibility of our children. Our children do not go to school to keep the teacher happy they go to learn and have fun while learning. The goal should be for everyone to be happy not just the teacher.
We thank you in advance for reviewing recess time and its importance every day. And also for motivating them to go to school and to have fun while learning using student centered activities and the S.T.E.A.M program.
Recess should not be looked at as a reward but as a child right.
