I wonder if the administration has witnessed the positive changes in the "whole child" due to Reading Recovery! I am sure they wouldn't be considering cutting the program if they had. I also wonder if they have read the research supporting Reading Recovery!

My daughter's spoken vocabulary is beyond impressive for a 1st grader, yet she has struggled with reading since school began. She has excelled in all other academic areas, so she is not in need of an IEP. It didn't matter that her father and I read to get and worked with her regularly on this subject. We've even payed tutors hoping she would improve. During one of her parent-teacher confrences, we were told she had "plateaued" in terms of her reading potential this far. However, her teacher informed us that there was a specialized program called "READING RECOVERY" that she may be eligible for. As it turned out, she was chosen to take part in this program. While skeptical at first, we had already tried everything, and so we were hopeful this program would help our daughter progress and maybe even help her advance to meet the levels at which her classmates were reading, She had, at this point, become completely discouraged and had no interest in reading at all. Pushing her to do so only upset her and made things worse! READING RECOVERY changed all of that. The dedicated teacher working with her taught her the specialized skill set necessary to improve her ability to read far beyond our expectations, using techniques that made it fun and enjoyable for her so that she actually looked forward to her reading lessons!!! The exceptional progress that we have seen in her reading is amazing and now she ENJOYS reading!!! She is no longer frustrated when asked to read and has made significant stides, all due to READING RECOVERY!!! The ability to read is the foundation for everything my daughter, as well as every other child, Will do going forward, academically and otherwise. This program is instumental in our children's success and it is imperative that it NOT BE CUT!!! It is a necessity to have this program available to the children who need it to insure their success in the future!!!

Reading Recovery works! Ending the program will deprive children of their opportunity to catch up to their peers and be successful.

Reading Recovery is the best way for struggling students to learn how to read and feel confident as a reader and writer. Reading Recovery works especially for our ELL population.

The academic, emotional and social impact of Reading Recovery is truly profound and life-changing for the lowest achieving students. Reading Recovery can change the entire culture of a school from flat to dynamic. This is a must for Warwick and all of Rhode Island.

The research clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of Reading Recovery for early, emergent readers and the sustainability over time. Administrators and decision makers need to look at the long reaching effectiveness and cost savings over time. Every student in need deserves to have the most highly effective, researched-based intervention available. It always amazes me that the administrators and decision makers with the least understanding of the reading process and programs, such as Reading Recovery, are the ones making the decisions and depriving early learners of opportunities for accelerated growth. Public education can do better. The children deserve it!

Before canceling a program with proven effectiveness and replacing it with something else, it would be important to check the effectiveness of alternatives.
