Renfrewshire Council plans to cut musical instrument lessons from once a week to fortnightly. This would be a huge step back for school music departments and their pupils. Music instructors will lose their jobs - and already face threats of disciplinary action if they speak out at all. This universally condemned plan to halve tuition could be scrapped for less than £143,000 next year. This is less than a tenth of the £2 million sum the Council are putting into balances next year. It is time to stop the 'musical madness' and think again. By signing up, I call on Renfrewshire Council to: 1. Retain weekly musical instrument lessons. 2. Withdraw of current proposals and full review. 3. No compulsory redundancies of music/instrument staff. 4. No disciplinary action taken against staff that speak out in favour of weekly lessons. (By responding to this petition I realise my details may be forwarded to the appropriate Council Officers and Member of the Scottish Parliament).

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people have joined this fight. If you have a moment today please send the link to a few people so we can hit that five hundred mark and show the council we are serious.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the stories you have been sharing about what music lessons mean to your families. The weight of this situation feels much lighter knowing that so many of you are behind this cause. I am currently working on getting these messages in front of the right people at the council.

I honestly never expected to see 100 people back this effort when I started it. This response belongs entirely to those of you who stepped up to defend our music program for the students.

Ridiculous decision. Music is just as important as maths and english. Do not slash the funding.

Weekly lessons are the only way to actually learn an instrument properly. Fortnightly is basically useless.

My son loves his trumpet lessons. Cutting this down is just cruel and ruins his progress. Leave the music teachers alone.

Disgraceful. The council has the money they just dont want to spend it on our culture and our youth. Sort it out.
