Roanoke Benson Unit District #60 is considering the possibility of issuing Life-Safety bonds (borrowing) between 7 and 9 million dollars to make improvements and updates to our school buildings. This loan will be paid back over the next 20 years by an increase in property taxes.

At this time a vote by the citizens is not required for the school board to take out this loan and proceed with the project. A simple vote by the school board and approval by the State is all that is required.

By signing this petition you are neither supporting nor opposing the building project itself. You are simply asking the school board to allow the residents of Roanoke Benson Unit District #60 an opportunity to vote on whether we should be taking on this 20 year debt and raising our property taxes. This could be done by a simple non-binding referendum being placed on our next ballot.

We, the residents of Roanoke Benson Unit District #60, hereby respectfully request that the school board place a non-binding referendum on a ballot and allow us to vote before proceeding any further with the Life-Safety bonds.

Total transparency is needed here. If the project is so great then the board should have no problem putting it to a vote.

We should absolutely have a vote on this. 20 years of debt is a huge deal for this community.

7 to 9 million is a massive amount of money. The people deserve a say in how their tax dollars are spent.

Why are they trying to hide this from the taxpayers? Put it on the ballot let us decide.

Taxes around here are already high enough. School board needs to hear from the actual residents before doing this.
