In March 2024, the Honorable LG amended the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act of 2004 approving reservation for newly included tribes, including Paharis, adding new castes in OBC and then providing an overall 60% reservation to reserved categories while squeezing the general category to 40%. Then there is horizontal reservation and the EWS category is also deducted from the unreserved category which further reduces the percentage (28-34). As we all know J&K has around 70% unreserved population as on date. The new reservation policy has further stressed unreserved aspirants.
Unreserved Students, the majority in number have to compete for a very small percentage of posts|seats.
Our health sector, education sector, and all other sectors will be badly hit when the majority are left out of these sectors.
We also demand an immediate caste census in Jammu and Kashmir to ascertain the exact numbers of each reserved group or community. Such an exercise is critical for creating a transparent and equitable reservation policy that mirrors the socio-economic realities of the region and ensures justice for all.
Our future doctors, engineers, students and government job aspirants are frustrated as it seems end of world for them. Most of the general category students are no longer interested in continuing with formal education.
We are not against reservation, But we demand fairness and balance. Counting the exact numbers of each reserved community and assessing their socio-economic status is the first step toward achieving that balance.
In the meantime, you are requested to put on hold all the recent advertisements unless the gravity of this issue is ascertained and solved.
Therefore we request for rationalization of reservation in terms of population in J&K and scraping of reservation policy 2024.
