During the 2010 General Election, student voters at the St John's polling station in Ranmoor, Sheffield were separated from other 'local residents' also waiting to vote, under the pretext of speeding the voting process up. 'Local residents' were fast-tracked whilst students were forced to wait upwards of two hours in the rain, with a significant number left unable to vote as a result. This discrimination against students is an outrage, and was instigated under the authority of the presiding officer, Andy Globe, who at the time claimed full responsibility for this illegal prioritising of voters. Despite a great deal of media attention, this issue has been avoided by Sheffield City Council, who has responded to all emails with an automated message that does nothing to address this issue. (re:http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=121206334573223&v=app_2373072738#!/topic.php?uid=121206334573223&topic=49 ) When questioned about people being unable to vote, the Chief Executive John Mothersole and his deputy, Lee Adams, both blamed the problem on students 'turning up late' and 'not having their ballot papers', which are both gross false generalisations and completely irrelevant to a person's right to vote. We demand acknowledgement of the situation, in the form of an apology and promise that no other discriminatory action against student will occur in any other election.
