Formal Request for Memorial Recognition at Hillcrest Park (Dr. H.J. Williams Park)
To the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department and City Council,
We are writing to formally propose a lasting tribute to Randy Washington, Sr. within the newly reconstructed Hillcrest Park. Whether through the naming of the basketball facilities or the park’s new walking and cycling trails, we believe Randy’s life serves as the perfect blueprint for the spirit of this revitalized space.
A Foundation in Hillcrest
Randy Washington, Sr. was a true product of the Hillcrest neighborhood. Long before he became a household name in Texas athletics, his "gym" was the Hillcrest Park basketball court. Without the benefit of modern camps, Randy spent countless hours on these local blacktops, honing the skills that would lead him to become a High School Hall of Famer and an All-State Basketball Player.
His impact at Roy Miller High School was historic; his No. 21 jersey was only the second in the school’s history to be retired, and the first ever for a basketball player.
A Life of Movement and Mentorship
Randy’s dedication to fitness and the Corpus Christi outdoors didn't end on the court. In his adult life, he became an avid and respected cyclist. A familiar face in the local cycling community, Randy successfully competed in numerous long-distance events, including several "Conquer the Coast" rides through the streets of Corpus Christi and the "Tour de Goliad."
His 40-year career with ExxonMobil, retiring as the Southwest Regional Safety Manager, stood as a testament to his discipline. Yet, he always returned to his roots—mentoring young athletes and emphasizing that excellence is a lifelong pursuit, whether on two wheels or on the hardwood.
The Request
As Hillcrest Park is rebuilt to serve a new generation, we respectfully request that the City recognize Randy Washington, Sr.’s contributions to our history and health. We propose:
- The Randy Washington, Sr. Memorial Courts, honoring his legendary basketball career; OR
- The Randy Washington, Sr. Heritage Trail, honoring his legacy as a cyclist and his commitment to a healthy, active Corpus Christi.
Naming these facilities after Randy ensures that his story—one of hard work, sportsmanship, and neighborhood pride—continues to inspire every resident who walks, runs, or plays in this park.
We look forward to your guidance on the next steps to bring this tribute to fruition.
Sincerely,
The Family and Friends of Randy Washington, Sr.
