Dean Steve Perry
Dean of School of Contemporary Arts
Ramapo College of New Jersey
Dear Dean Perry,
We the students of the Digital Filmmaking Concentration of Ramapo College sign this petition with the intention of dissuading you from instating Professor Marta Bautis as Professor of the Senior Project and Senior Project Proposal courses.
Marta Bautis lacks the technical knowledge involved in digital filmmaking to be able to teach a class of this level and importance. Students of Marta Bautis cite her reliance on students, faculty, and staff members to teach basic technical skills in filmmaking. In addition her students recognize a lack of diverse criticism where her advice and critiques on student projects are redundant and unhelpful.
Collectively the students of the Filmmaking Concentration request a professor for the Senior Project class that has a profound understanding of the cinema arts, is able to give constructive criticism on the aesthetic qualities of a film and effectively convey technical knowledge for modern cinema. Professor Neel Scott is a prime example of a talented filmmaker with a strength in teaching college level students. All of Professor Scott’s past and present students recognize how knowledgeable he is, how much experience he has and how helpful he is in improving the filmmaking skills of Ramapo Film students.
With this new insight we trust you will make the best decision for the Ramapo Filmmaking Program. Thank you.
Sincerely,
The Digital Filmmaking Students of Ramapo College

The faculty has remained silent so far but we know they are seeing the pressure build. Reach out to the Dean now to demand that they respect our academic needs. Send a direct email to his office today because we cannot afford to let this decision go unchallenged.

The administration is finally starting to pay attention to the momentum we have built together. Post the link to your Facebook page and text three friends to keep this pressure on Dean Perry. We need to maintain this focus until we get the instruction our department deserves.

If she can barely teach 300 level courses, how do you expect seniors to take a 400 level course with her. Students getting jobs will decline after this switch off it occurs
Marta is certainly not the best choice for a class so vital to any student of film. Her ideas of the medium are outdated and frankly a majority of high school students interested in film could probably produce a more coherent and aesthetically pleasing documentary. She cares about her students but isn't capable enough to teach a college level class comprised of serious film students.
As a Digital Filmmaking alum I'm surprised this is still an issue with the current students because we brought up this same concern many times when we were still there. Best of luck to you guys, you really deserve a great professor for your Senior Project.
Marta Bautis is my advisor and I have never received any useful advice, but was terrified for several years that if I didn't go she'd fail me in her documentary class. Her methods of grading are not based academically but on her personal perception of the student and she is spiteful against those who speak out against her. I would not wish her upon any of the younger students, especially not such an important class as Senior Project.
Agreed that Marta lacks the necessary technical knowledge to teach this course, she in fact ruins any production related class (ask any Doc student). I also agree that a professor such as Neel Scott is an excellent choice as I had him for my senior project.
Not the best choice

I graduated years ago, but while I was there I worked in the equipment office. At least three times I can recall, she couldn't make one of her classes on short notice. I stepped up and basically taught the classes. I had a student come up to me afterwards to say that she learned more from me in that one class than she had learned from Marta the entire semester. I honestly don't know why after all these years she is even still there.
